Braves select RHP Gomez from Yankees

The Atlanta Braves picked 7th in today’s Rule 5 Draft (8th overall since Padres had 40-men on their roster already) and selected right-handed pitcher Anyelo Gomez from the New York Yankees.  The 24-year-old jumped from low Single-A to Triple-A last year and definitely has promise.

In 38 games Gomez posted a 5-3 record in 2017 with a 1.93 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 70.1 innings.  Opponents batting average was .199 against Gomez in 2017.  Pretty solid numbers, eh?

The 6’1″ 185-pound righty is from the Dominican Republic and signed with the Yankees in 2012.

Gomez probably impressed the Braves in the Dominican Winter League as he pitched a shutout inning of relief for Gigantes del Cibao against the Toros del Estes on opening night.  He ended the season with a 3.60 ERA with 13 strikeouts and six walks in 10 innings pitched.

Here’s a videos of Gomez from his Double-A outing in August…

Gomez has a low to mid 90’s fastball and his secondary stuff improved a lot in 2017.

The Braves did select two other players in the Rule 5 Draft, but Gomez will be the only player that has to be put on the Braves 40-man roster.  That list currently sits at 38 players right now.

An interesting side note came from Braves beat writer Mark Bowman…

Could the Braves flip Gomez for someone they’re most interested in?  It’s very possible.  Alex Anthopoulos could have some tricks up his sleeves.

A possible move could be developing with the Reds.  We heard rumors yesterday that the Braves were interested in Adam Duvall.  I’m not sure I like this move as much as I would like Eugenio Suarez.  Duvall is already 29-years-old with possibly his best seasons behind him and plays the outfield.  Suarez could be the third baseman we’re looking for and is only 26-years-old.

Next: Braves Winter Meetings rumors

Many fans are patiently waiting for Double-A’s to make a huge splash, while others are wanting him to stay put.  Let’s see what AA does!…and yes, let’s have some trust in our new guy.

UPDATE:

Now this from Bowman…he doesn’t believe the Braves will trade newly selected RHP Gomez

Can we all agree it’s just a guessing game at this point?
