Don’t expect news out of the Braves camp over the next few days

The Atlanta Braves and recently appointed General Manager (November 13th), Alex Anthopoulos, have made four trades within his first five weeks on the job.  We haven’t seen that big splash trade just yet and don’t get your hopes up to see it within the next few days.

Christmas has always been a very quiet day for all MLB teams.  No MLB trades or signings have ever happened on December 25, but on 2001 Hideki Matsui did sign a contract.

The outfielder signed a one-year deal worth $4.7 million to play for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan.  This made him the highest paid player in Japanese baseball history.

Anyway, back to the Braves and Anthopoulos.  Atlanta’s GM spoke to Braves beat writer Mark Bowman about the upcoming holiday season.  The quick interview was posted on MLB.com and was a nice personable article.  When Bowman asked AA about his wife’s reaction if a trade was made over the break, his response was priceless…

MLB.com: What would be your wife’s reaction if you were to strike a deal on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?

Anthopoulos: She might not be my wife anymore. I’d have a lot of explaining to do.

Anthopoulos won’t even be in the country over this holiday season.  He was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and will be visiting family within our northern border.  Without the new GM in house, I’m just taking a guess that the Braves offices will be pretty quiet over the next few days.  Maybe they’re getting next week off?  Probably not though.

Next: Preston Tucker and Brandon McCarthy respond to trades

The Braves haven’t always been quiet during the days around Christmas.  On Christmas Eve in 1959, the Braves signed 20 year-old outfielder out of the Dominican Republic, Rico Carty.

Another side note…did you know?…Ricky Henderson’s birthday is December 25.  He’ll be 59-years-young.
