Braves pitching prospect doing something extremely impressive

Don’t know the name Mike Soroka yet?  Well, you should probably remember this one.  Atlanta Braves 20-year-old pitching prospect is quite simply something else!

The Braves drafted Soroka in the 1st round of the 2015 MLB draft…28th overall…from Bishop Carroll High School in Calgary, Alberta…yes, freakin’ Canada.

Eh?!  Braves have scouts up there?

Eh?!  They play something other than hockey up there?

Eh?!  They’re summers are long enough to play baseball?

I can say all those things as little jabs because my wife is from Canada and I also give her and her family a hard time.  I’ll probably be receiving a text message from each member in 5…4…3…2…1

More from Braves News

During his high school days, Soroka was also a member of the Canadian Junior National Team.  He received a full-ride to attend the University of UC Berkley to play ball, but decided to take the $1,974,700 signing bonus the Braves put in front of him.

Soroka has been cruising through the Braves minor league system.  He skipped pitching at the High Single-A Braves team in 2017 to get to Double-A quicker.  He spent all of last season with the Mississippi Braves and went 11-8 with a 2.75 ERA.  In 26 games started, he had a strikeout to walk ratio of 125/34.

The 6-5, 225 pounder has a low to mid 90’s sinking fastball with an above-average curveball and a solid change-up.

MLB Pipeline has Soroka ranked as the Braves #4 prospect.  Baseball America has him ranked as #27 in all of the MLB.  Keith Law’s newest prospect ranks has Soroka #60 overall in baseball.

This kid is on the rise.  He’s going to be a force to reckon with.

Since he accomplished pretty much everything he needed to in Double-A, he’ll most likely start the 2018 season with the Gwinnett Braves.

This upcoming season should be a fun one to watch with Soroka and Kolby Allard both moving up to Triple-A.  I expect Soroka to pitch extremely well with Gwinnett and at some point in 2018 pitch for the Atlanta Braves.

As players all over have posted videos and photos of their offseason workouts, none of theirs has been as impressive as this next one.  Check out this video of Soroka.  Posted by Jeff Osadec of the Canadian Sports Institute Calgary.  It’s of Soroka jumping onto these boxes which were 57″ inches off the ground.

57″?  Wow, that’s nothing compared to when Byrce Harper posted his video in 2015.  Wait, his was only 55″ inches high.

Then there is Brett Lawrie who took the concept of box jumping to an entirely different level.  66″ inches.  Yeah, that’s kinda high.  Take off about 50″ inches and I’ll give it a shot.

Next: Braves and Milwaukee trade partners?

However you look at it, this is impressive by Soroka.  Many of these box jumps have been posted by football players or positional guys.  Maybe Soroka just has that drive in him to be the best!
