Braves LHP Kyle Muller could be in for a big season in 2018

Pitchers?  We’ve got em’!  The Atlanta Braves are stacked in the pitching department.  With names like Kolby Allard, Mike Soroka, Ian Anderson, Luiz Gohara, Kyle Wright, Joey Wentz, and Max Fried, the rest kind of get lost in the shuffle.

One name that you’ll want to remember that’s not on this list…left-handed pitcher Kyle Muller.

Muller was a part of the draft class that brought the Braves the Big 3…Anderson, Wentz and Muller.

He was the Braves 2nd round selection, 44th overall, out of Dallas Jesuit College Prep in Texas.  He was the Gatorade High School Player of the Year in 2016.  He was a legit two-way prospect in high school and scouts saw him as a likely 2nd or 3rd round prospect as a first baseman and a borderline 1st round selection off the mound.

While he’s a tremendous hitter, Muller got his notice from his excellent pitch-ability, as he struck out 24 straight hitters in his final year.

He was actually viewed by a number of teams as a guy who may go to college and turn into a better hitter after college than a pitcher, but the Braves saw him as a pitcher and were willing to sign him now for that purpose.

He has a solid fastball in the low-90s and a very good frame at 6’6″ and 225 pounds to project as a mid-rotation guy or even better, with a number of comments comparing his approach on the mound and frame to that of Jon Lester.

More from Braves News

Muller was dominant in the GCL in 2016, throwing 27 2/3 innings with a 0.65 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and a 12/38 BB/K ratio.

He was intended to be put on the Kolby Allard plan for 2017, starting in extended spring and coming up at the end of May/beginning of June to Rome to open 2017, but he ended up having some injury stuff to open his 2017 during extended spring.

In 2017, he started 11 games and held a 4.15 ERA with the Danville Braves.  Muller struck out 49 batters while walking 18 in 47.2 innings pitched.

This upcoming season, his talents will hopefully come to rise to the surface.  This dude is a stud.  I’ve been extremely excited about Muller since the Braves drafted him.  One, because of his stuff on the mound, but two, because of what he can do offensively while he’s pitching!

It will be great to see Muller open the season with the Rome Braves, but that’s not a guarantee.  He’s surely getting ready for the upcoming season though.

Driveline Baseball posted a video of Muller today that showed Muller throwing hard…very hard!

Don’t sleep on this guy.  Remember the name!  I’m ready to follow him up the Braves minor league tree.
