Braves send down a few pitchers from Spring Training roster

We were questioning mid-week last week when the Atlanta Braves would begin roster moves.  It looks as though the process is getting underway on Sunday.

The Braves have optioned right-handed pitchers Jason Hursh and Akeel Morris to Triple-A Gwinnett.  Also on the move, the Braves first pick in 2017 (and 5th overall) right-handed pitcher Kyle Wright.  He will be reassigned to the Braves minor league camp.

On Saturday, the Braves assigned left-handed pitcher Corbin Clouse to the team.  This move was to just add another arm to the bullpen in case it’s needed.

Morris has appeared in three games this spring, pitching 2.1 innings, giving up one hit, four walks and had one strikeout.  Hitters have hit .125 against him so far this year.  He was drafted by the New York Mets in 2010 and was traded to the Braves on June 8, 2016 for Kelly Johnson.  The 25-year-old definitely has potential to be in the Braves bullpen this season.

Hursh was the Braves 1st round pick (31st overall) in 2013 from Oklahoma State University.  He appeared in three games this spring, pitching 2.2 innings, giving up eight hits, seven runs, three walks and didn’t record a strikeout.  His ERA stood at 23.62 this spring.  What the Braves will do with the 26-year-old is still in the air.

Wright appeared in two games this spring, pitching 2.1 innings, giving up four hits, four runs (two earned runs), one walk and had one strikeout.  The 22-year-old went from Rookie ball to High Single-A+ in 2017.  He pitched in nine games for the Braves minor league squads last year.  There’s a good chance he sky rockets through the Braves minor league system.  He’s been ranked as high as the Braves number two prospect.

Next: Braves Riley absolutely destroys a ball...oppo!

The Braves are currently 3-6-1 in the 2018 Spring Training season, but we’ve seen plenty of promise from the young kids.  It would have been nice to see Wright pitch once again with the big league team, but he’ll get more of an opportunity to pitch regularly now that he’s down in the minor league spring training.

Atlanta takes on the Miami Marlins on Sunday at the Wide World of Sports complex.  Braves Mike Foltynewicz takes the mound for the second time this spring.
