The Atlanta Braves continue their “Comeback Boys” tradition in the 8th and 9th to rally against Mets for 4-3 win while one pitcher makes his debut.

The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets played a relatively quiet game as starters Julio Teheran and Jacob deGrom were dealing. Teheran threw seven scoreless innings with six strikeouts, but the offense couldn’t back him up.

The Braves had no hits until the 5th inning when Carlos Perez lined a 2-out hit to right. DeGrom kept the offense to only a couple walks while striking out 10 through seven.

In the 3rd inning and one out, Teheran had some trouble when he gave Jose Reyes his first hit of the season and then another to Michael Conforto. Reyes, already having stole second, moved to 3rd. However, Teheran struck out the next two batters to escape the inning.

The Braves were close to scoring in the 6th when Ender Inciarte hit a lead-off single. Inciarte then quickly stole second before attempting at third. He initially got to the base first and was safe but during the slide, his leg came off and Todd Frazier kept his glove against Inciarte. Initially called safe but was overturned on a replay.

Another out later, Freddie Freeman knocked a double that would’ve scored Inciarte however, the game remained scoreless.

Teheran ended the day on 98 pitches and facing the minimum in his last two innings. Another good outing for the 27-year-old.

Some Action From The Mets

For the 8th, Sam Freeman came on to pitch and continued his slump. To his defense, the Braves defense was pretty sloppy that inning and only made it worse. Freeman started with a walk to Wilmer Flores. Reyes then reached on a bunt single that should have been an out but Ozzie Albies didn’t get to 1st base in time.

Next, Conforto grounded to third and should have been a routine double play but a lot happened. Albies receiving the ball, didn’t get a full grasp of it and dropped the ball. So what should have been a routine double-play became an all safe, bases loaded situation. Freeman would be taken out for Shane Carle. He managed to get Yoenis Cespedes to fly out on one pitch but then gave up a single to Asdrubal Cabrera for two runs. Jay Bruce then singled in another run.

Mets now up 3-0. A strike out and a line out, finally ended the inning.

Braves Capitalize On Mets Bullpen Breakdown

The unbelievable happened. The Braves and manager Brian Snitker have stated that this team will fight until the final out. However, after that inning, you probably are not going to be in the most uplifting mood. The Braves continued to fight with the help of some bullpen breakdown.

AJ Ramos had came on to pitch and the Braves have had some rallying history against him. Ramos started by giving up a lead-off walk to Ryan Flaherty. Inciarte looked to be on the way to be walked after two balls but eventually struck out. However, Ramos continued to break, walking Albies on four straight balls.

The Mets went and made a pitching change, bringing out Jerry Blevins for a lefty-on-lefty match-up against Freddie Freeman. Still, Freeman launched a double to deep left center to score Flaherty and Albies. A wild pitch moved Freddie to third but both Nick Markakis and Preston Tucker struck out to end the inning. Jeurys Familia came out to pitch against Tucker. 3-2 Mets still up.

My Oh My

Top of the 9th, Jesse Biddle made his MLB debut and impressed. Ground outs from Tomas Nido and Jose Reyes to start it off, with Nido going on one pitch. An eight pitch battle from Conforto led to a walk.

More from Tomahawk Take

Next came one heart-stopping, yet confusing moment. Cespedes batting, shot a fast ball to left. Cespedes didn’t move and Biddle called foul but the umpire said it was a fair home run. The Braves immediately called for the replay and it showed a clear gap between the ball and the foul poll. Two pitches later, Cespedes grounded out to end the inning.

Bottom of the 9th, Familia returned to pitch three more outs but seemed to lose control. He gave up a four pitch lead-off walk to Dansby Swanson before Johan FREAKING Camargo blasted a ball down right center for a RBI triple. This tied the game 3-3. If he wasn’t stopped at third, Camargo probably could’ve ran home for a walk-off homer. No. Problem.

Kurt Suzuki came out and at this point, the crowd is basically roaring. He knocked the first pitch to Todd Frazier who couldn’t grasp the ball, allowing Suzuki an infield single. Runners at the corner. Charlie Culberson, however, struck out while pinch hitting for Biddle. But. No. Problem.

Time for Inciarte to get some redemption. Inciarte bounced the first pitch for a bunt single as Camargo dashed down the line.

Safe! The Braves win 4-3 on a walk-off! Biddle gets his first win on his MLB debut.
