This afternoon the Atlanta Braves placed promising rookie Mike Soroka on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder.

The Atlanta Braves backdated the move to May 14th, two days after his start against the Marlins.

Mark Bowman tweeted that the move is precautionary and the Braves expect Soroka to return in time to make his next start.

Atlanta Braves protecting their prospect

The Braves surprised the pundits when they selected Mike Soroka in the first round – 28th overall – of the 2015 draft. He soon showed doubters why the Braves selected him, moving quickly through the system and landing in the majors two years and and 21 days later

Prior to his call up, Soroka made four starts for the Stripers posting a 1.99 ERA and 0.971 WHIP over 22 2/3 innings. The Braves called on him to start against the Mets on May Day. Six one hit innings later, he had the Mets hollering mayday.

On the night Soroka threw 80 pitches (58 Strikes) and looked in complete control, striking out five Mets, while allowing one-run and six hits without a walk.

That start convinced most the rotation had just added a potentially dominant arm. His second outing against the Giants at Sun Trust Park wasn’t as successful. They took a more patient approach at the plate than the Mets and Soroka left after just four innings, 84 pitches and allowing four runs.

On May 12 he faced the Marlins but once again left early, throwing 90 pitches in just 4 2/3 innings while allowing five runs.
