Atlanta Braves sign Brian McCann
By James Kunkle
The Atlanta Braves announced today they have signed Brian
McCann to a contract. The Athens, Georgia native will now get to come home and possibly finish out his career with the Braves, the same team he played for in his first full 9 seasons.
Brian McCann, will turn 35 in February was a fan favorite throughout his first tenure with the Atlanta Braves, before leaving via Free Agency to sign with the New York Yankees. He was traded to the Houston Astros before the 2017 season, where he put up quality numbers and won a World Series ring.

The 2018 season proved to be more difficult for McCann, mostly due to injuries as he did have a surgical procedure done on his knee in the summer of last year. In his first tenure with the Braves, McCann was voted to the all star team 7 times and was named the silver slugger for the Catcher spot in the National league 5 times.
Financial terms have not been released as of yet, beyond that contract being for just one year. The Braves have yet to comment either on the potential signing. It seems as if the Braves will now move forward with a Catching tandem of McCann, and Tyler Flowers. This signing also signals that the Braves will probably not acquire the services of JT Realmuto. It seems the cost of prospects was deemed too high for the Braves liking.
The deal is expected to be for 1 year only. One has to wonder if this will also be Brian McCann’s final year of playing as well? Some may be surprised that of all current players, Brian McCann has the 44th highest career WAR at 31.7. Lastly, as most catchers do, McCann’s defensive numbers have dropped with his age, but he is still a reliable source behind the plate who should mesh well with the young pitchers the Braves have in the system.
So what do you think about BMac coming home to the Atlanta Braves? Were you hoping for someone else or are you excited. Let us know below.
