Atlanta Braves move quickly and name Dana Brown VP Scouting
By Fred Owens
The Braves announced this afternoon they hired Dana Brown as Vice President of Scouting. Their announcement comes less than 48 hours after the unexpected, and as yet unexplained dismissal, of Roy Clark and Brian Bridges
As Atlanta Braves fans pondered, discussed and tried to figure out why GM Alex Anthopoulos dismissed Clark and Bridges 90 days after giving them a new contract, the team moved swiftly to fill the position. Here’s the formal announcement of today’s hiring:
"“We are extremely excited to add Dana to our baseball operations staff,” Anthopoulos said in a news release from the team. “His track record of identifying major league talent is unquestioned, and we look forward to his contributions to our organization.”"
Dana Brown isn’t new to the task of scouting and player evaluation and was rumored to be on the verge of a job with Atlanta amid the post-John Coppollela scandal in 2017.
On November 29, 2017, Atlanta Braves newly minted GM announced he’d hired Andrew Tinnish as vice president of amateur and international scouting; two days later Tinnish withdrew his name due to family reasons.
The same day, reports surfaced that Brown and Ed Lynch would “at some point” join Anthopoulos in Atlanta’s front office. The report by Bob Nightengale must have come from a space-time wormhole, either that or “at some point” means within the next 15 months.
The Braves created the VP of amateur scouting position specifically for Tinnish and decided not to fill it once he pulled out. Today they resurrected the title and hired Brown.
