Atlanta Braves Starting Rotation is a Mess Right Now

Between injuries and bad performances in Spring Training, the Atlanta Braves starting rotation looks like a mess at the moment.

Thursday has not been a banner day for the Atlanta Braves starting rotation.

Early in the day we learned that Mike Foltynewicz will miss his next Spring Training start because of elbow soreness. Later we learned that Luiz Gohara and Kevin Gausman are both dealing with shoulder issues.

We already found out last week that Mike Soroka is still battling shoulder soreness, although he was expected to start throwing again on Thursday.

When you couple that news together with the fact that Touki Toussaint, the leader for the fifth spot in the rotation, got lit up by the Tigers and Thursday was not great for Braves fans.

Toussaint lasted just one inning in a game that he was likely scheduled to go three. He gave up five runs on four hits and a walk (at least he only walked on, right?).

That only leaves Julio Teheran and Sean Newcomb in the starting rotation. And Teheran hasn’t pitched and I don’t see him scheduled to pitch any time soon.

Newcomb was solid in his Spring Training debut, but he stilled walked two batters, which is concerning.

I know it’s just Spring Training and it’s not even March yet, but this is not the start to the season many were hoping for. Especially when fans have been screaming for the front office to bring in depth at pitching (or at least I’ve been screaming).

To settle things down a bit, I am sure the Braves are slow playing the injuries with Soroka, Folty, and Gausman.

It is concerning for Gohara who really need to pitch this spring to show he can still be a great pitcher after a horrible 2018 both on and off the field.

Hopefully, in a few weeks, we’ll be looking back at this and laughing at ourselves for getting all worked up. But right now, this is a huge concern for the Atlanta Braves.
