We’d all love to see the Atlanta Braves make that big deal in the next 2 weeks, but are some of the key stores starting to close?

A funny thing is happening on the way to the market.  The buying Atlanta Braves may be running into a sellers’ market after all.

While the division leaders across baseball have stepped up and extended their leads, the teams ‘in the middle’ seem to be compressing.

This is especially true in the National League, where ten teams are all within 3½ games of a Wild Card playoff position entering play Tuesday evening.

This includes teams that were recently thought to be certain sellers such as San Francisco, Pittsburgh, and San Diego.

The American League is still proceeding fairly close to expectations, with only Texas acting as a surprise contender.

So in the AL, the list of sellers is fairly well set:

  • Baltimore
  • Detroit
  • Kansas City
  • Toronto
  • Seattle
  • Chisox
  • The Angels… they probably will sit this on out unless they get hot this week

The NL Scrum

It’s the National League that’s going to require a deeper look:  of those semi-contenders (nope:  the Marlins and Mets are not among them), let’s take a look at the chances about which teams will end up with a shopping cart and which will pass out sales flyers.

All pending schedules listed include games played on Tuesday, July 16.

CINCY REDS

  • 43-48 / 3.5 games out of the Wild Card
  • SCHEDULE TO END OF MONTH:
    • @Cubs (2), Cardinals (4), @Brewers (3), Rockies (3), Pirates (3)

The Reds have owned the Cubs (7 of 10) but the Pirates (3 of 10) have returned the favor; they’re 1 game below .500 against the rest.

This is a team playing under .500, 5-5 in their last 10 games, and looking at a tough 2 weeks.  It would be a surprise to see them bust out and make a run.

VERDICT:  The Reds will not be big sellers, but could add a small piece that looks toward 2019.
