If you haven’t been paying attention, then start now:  Ronald Acuna is in the midst of what could become one of the rarest of feats in major league history – let alone Atlanta Braves history.

There’s some history in progress amongst the Atlanta Braves, and it should be noticed while it’s still in progress.  Ronald Acuna Jr. is on a tear and fans of baseball all over need to pay attention.

What are the rare feats of baseball?

Is it the no-hitter?  Not really… wikipedia tells us that as of today, major league baseball recognizes 302 of them since 1876 when the National League became an organized professional league.  Heck, that’s roughly 2 every year.

Well, then it’s the perfect game, right?  Not even that… there have been 23 of those.

How about hitting for the cycle?  Would you believe 276 times (and those only since 1908)?

The unassisted triple play… that’s gotta be it.  Not quite… but we are getting warmer.  This feat has happened 15 times… and Braves’ shortstops have done the deed in 2 of those events.

4 homers in a game?  25 times.  2 homers in one inning?  49.  Only when you get to the most bizarre of scenarios can you find the ‘1-off’ feats of baseball… like double no-hitters, perfect games in the World Series, or 5 strikeouts in a single half-inning.

Yeah – that actually happened in the minors last week.  Even that wasn’t the first time for this crazy situation, either.

But as for the production kinds of rare feats, it’s hard to come up with something truly rare over the decades of major league baseball…

…except when you’re talking about what Ronald Acuna has a chance to do.
