While the injury bug has chomped down hard on the Atlanta Braves in the past few weeks, the recovery calendar could be aligning well as we head toward September.

The Atlanta Braves are hardly unique here.  Every MLB team has to deal with injuries, no doubt, but it can often be that the key of weathering injuries involves when they happen… or at least when the player can return.

Some prime examples of how bad timing works have just come up elsewhere:

  • the Cubs announced on Wednesday that relief pitcher Brandon Morrow is ‘done for the season
  • The day before, Red Sox ace Chris Sale informed reporters that he will be shut down for 6 weeks (basically the rest of the regular season) to allow his balky elbow to absorb a platelet-rich plasma shot.
  • The Pirates put Chris Archer on the IL with shoulder inflammation, which will probably end his season as well.  In this case, though, it’s the Pirates, so there’s no post-season involvement to discuss… just a team that has to figure out how to fill out a rotation to finish the year.

In stark contrast, though, the Atlanta Braves are receiving a spate of better news about their injured crew member… including a possible surprise.

Let’s update the injury update we had from yesterday.

BRIAN McCANN –

As we suspected, it had to be something fairly notable before Brian McCann would actually remove himself from a game.  The surprisingly good news is this note that the Braves expect a minimum stay on the Injured List – a move that was also anticipated and was made official on Wednesday afternoon (with Alex Jackson recalled).

Even if the team doctors demand that he remain chained to a chair for a couple of additional days, that will get us to September 1st and the opportunity for active roster expansion… thus it wouldn’t matter whether McCann were activated from the IL or not.

Still… good news.  There’s more…
