What will the Atlanta Braves do at catcher in 2020?

The Atlanta Braves are set at just about every position going into 2020 except catcher so we look at some possible options.

For the past several years now the Atlanta Braves have done a great job of finding a catching tandem instead of having a primary catcher.

Last season Kurt Suzuki and Tyler Flowers split catching duties and combined for 20 home runs and 80 RBI.

The same two filled that spot in 2017 and combined to hit .282 with 31 home runs and 99 RBI.

This season Flowers and Brian McCann have received the majority of the starts behind the plate and have combined for 20 home runs and 69 RBI.

While this method has been quite successful for the Atlanta Braves, you have to wonder if they’ll look to find a primary catcher.

Rumors suggest they were at least interested in trading for J.T. Realmuto last offseason and he most certainly would have been a primary catcher for the Braves.

And then they went out and selected catcher Shea Langeliers ninth overall in the 2019 MLB Draft. You’d have to figure they expect him to be their primary catcher in the future.

In his rookie season at Rome, he hit .255 with 2 home runs and 34 RBI, but he’s more known for his work behind the plate.

Even though I think there is a chance for Langeliers to fly through the system, we probably still won’t see him in Atlanta until at least the 2021 season.

With McCann and the recently acquired Francisco Cervelli set to become free agents after this season and a team option on Flowers, it’s very unclear what the Atlanta Braves will do at catcher in 2020.
