Atlanta Braves: Extent of Freddie Freeman injury and the fallout
Every Atlanta Braves fan collectively held their breath on Sunday as Freddie Freeman reaggravated his elbow. We look at how serious the injury is and how it could affect the playoff roster.
The Atlanta Braves had a great weekend for the most part as they clinched their second consecutive NL East division title.
But the weekend didn’t come without its own disappointments.
Ronald Acuna Jr. failed to add to his stolen base total, while Dansby Swanson and Austin Riley continue to struggle at the plate.
However, the most concerning development of all came on Sunday when Freddie Freeman was visibly favoring his right arm in the dugout and eventually left the game.
And this isn’t the first time Freddie has dealt with this issue. Last week in Washington he also had to leave a game because of bone spurs acting up in his elbow.
Whether Freddie is willing to admit it or not, the bone spurs appear to be affecting him at the plate. And maybe this is me reading too much into it, but if you look at his body language lately it almost seems like this is waying heavily on him.
Even in the postgame celebration after they clinched on Friday night Freddie wasn’t mixing it up with the others like we’re used to seeing.
Since leaving that game in D.C., he’s just 1-for-14 at the plate with no extra base-hits.
But the slump goes even further than that as Mark Bowman of MLB.com points out on Twitter. Freeman is hitting just .103 over his last 10 games and he hasn’t hit a home run since September 1.
Really, you can go back further than that and see that Freddie Freeman hasn’t been the same player for a while now.
He hit just .276 in both July and August; although, he hit 11 home runs in August, and he’s currently hitting just .274 in September. That might be a pretty good average for most hitters, but not for a perennial .300 guy like Freddie.
The Atlanta Braves first baseman is still taking his walks and getting on base, but they really need Freddie to get that power stroke back for the postseason.
