Atlanta Braves: Top 3B (age 34-37) every season of the past decade
By Seth Carter
2017-2019
2019 – Justin Turner (34)
3.4 fWAR
.290/.372/.509
135 Games // 80 R // 27 HR // 67 RBI // 131 OPS+
Only four players qualified as third basemen between the ages of 34-37 during the 2019 season. Justin Turner led the way with a 3.4 WAR with Yuli Gurriel a close second with 3.2 WAR. Two former Braves rounded out the category with Sean Rodriguez posing a 0.4 WAR and Martin Prado with a -1.2 WAR.
2018 – David Freese (35)
2.0 fWAR
.296/.359/.471
113 Games // 38 R // 11 HR // 51 RBI // 126 OPS+
Freese only totaled 280 at-bats in 2018 at age 35, but it was enough to place him at the top of the list for third basemen between the ages of 34-37.
This season did not yield a good crop of old guys at third base as David Wright finished second with a 0 WAR. The remaining five players all posted a negative WAR in 2018. The players were Brandon Phillips, Cliff Pennington, Chase Headley, Martin Prado, and Jose Reyes.
2018 was not a good year for third basemen between the ages of 34-37.
2017 – David Freese (34)
1.8 fWAR
.263/.368/.371
130 Games // 44 R // 10 HR // 52 RBI // 98 OPS+
David Freese was again the winner by default because nobody between the ages of 34 and 37 had significant playing time outside of the 89 games Yunel Escobar posted with the Angels. The old guys didn’t get a lot of action this season either as Stephen Drew, Michael Martinez, Jhonny Peralta, and Aaron Hill combined for 287 plate appearances.
