We look back at one of the best Atlanta Braves games in recent history on Memorable Day and think back on those who served our great country.

When you think of Memorial Day there are certain things that come to mind. Those who paid the ultimate sacrifice defending our country is first. But then — for me at least — you think about Atlanta Braves baseball, barbecue, and homemade ice cream.

First and foremost, let me send out my complete gratitude to those who have served our country in the military, those who currently serve, and those who have passed on that fought for the freedoms we all enjoy.

One of those greatest freedoms that I enjoy the most is watching baseball. Unfortunately because of the current situation that’s not possible on this Memorial Day, so I thought we’d look back at one of the more memorable games in recent history.

While I was looking back at the last 10 games the Braves have played on Memorable Day, the results have not been great.

But there is definitely one game that sticks out far above the rest and since it was just back a couple of seasons ago in 2018 I’m sure you all remember it as well.

It’s, of course, the Charlie Culberson walk-off game against the Mets.

The Braves and Mets were playing a double-header that day — how awesome is it to have two Braves games on Memorial Day! I’d take just one right now.

But in that first game the Braves had to take on Jacob deGrom and the eventual Cy Young winner that year dominated Atlanta hitters for 7 innings.

The Mets bullpen, which was a mess that year, did what they did best.

Mickey Callaway went to his most reliable bullpen arm to try and get the last six outs and that task proved to be too much for him.

The Braves pushed across single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to make it a 3-2 game.

In the ninth inning, Johan Camargo started the inning off with a walk before Dansby Swanson lined out to right field (he’s still the unluckiest hitter in baseball).

And then our hero stepped to the plate in the form of Charlie Culberson.

Lugo, on his 32nd pitch in the outing, left a slider up in the zone and Charlie Clutch was able to pull out to left-center for the walk-off home run.

It’s certainly one of the best games that I can remember in Memorial Day history for the Braves, and as I watched the replay I still got the chills reliving that great moment from one of my favorite players in the game.

We here at Tomahawk Take hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day as we think about those who have served this country and even given their lives for it.
