First 30 — Catchers and Infielders

Catchers (2): Travis d’Arnaud and Tyler Flowers

Infielders (7): Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies, Dansby Swanson, Johan Camargo, Adeiny Hechavarria, Austin Riley, and Charlie Culberson

The catchers are pretty obvious, although, it would not be surprising to see the Braves carry three catchers to start the season with a 30-man roster. In that case, Alex Jackson probably joins this group.

The infield is pretty set as well. Riley is listed as an outfielder on the Braves roster on MLB.com, but I think it’s best to categorize him as an infielder.

Fortunately, the Braves have several infielders on this list that are capable of playing the outfield as well in Riley, Culberson, and Camargo.

The biggest battle here will continue to be third base. I think it’s still fairly safe to assume Camargo will get most of the everyday reps there. And with the DH, Snitker will have plenty of opportunities to get Riley’s bat in the lineup if he’s swinging it well.

Hechavarria and Culberson are both capable of playing all over the infield, but Hech is a better defender at short, second and third while Charlie is probably the better hitter.

The big difference here is Hech is on a Major League contract and Charlie isn’t. There is a chance Charlie could be sent to the group in Gwinnett, but I kind of doubt that happens. I think it’s a pretty safe bet that Charlie makes the team’s 30-man roster to start the season.
