The Atlanta Braves mounted a very late comeback Monday night but the deficit was entirely too big as they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 13-8.

The game Monday went off the rails very early as it was 3-0 Phillies before the Atlanta Braves and Sean Newcomb even recorded an out in the game. Bryce Harper drove a ball a good 50 or 60 feet past the wall in dead center field to give the Phillies the early lead.

A lead they would never relinquish as it was 13-1 at the end of the fifth inning later in the game.

The biggest news item of the night is without a doubt the inefficient start from Atlanta Braves starter Sean Newcomb. It’s a sight that Atlanta Braves fans and front office have become all too used to seeing when the left hander takes the mound for the Braves.

The stuff is there, but for whatever reason, it seems Sean Newcomb can not get out of his own way and provide good quality starts for the Atlanta Braves.

After the game, the news came out that it might be a while before we see another Sean Newcomb start for the Atlanta Braves.

Ahhh 2020 is the gift that keeps on giving.

The Atlanta Braves for the last few years have been touted for their depth of starting pitching prospects and by the looks of things, it’s going to be tested to the max this season as we have seen some of these guys fall down hard.

  • Mike Soroka was lost to the achilles injury last season
  • Mike Foltynewicz lost his velocity and only lasted one start before himself being optioned back to the alternate site
  • Now Sean Newcomb has went down the same route.

That does not even start down the Cole Hamels trail.

Players like Touki Toussaint, Kyle Wright, and possibly Huascar Ynoa will be called upon and hopefully excel for the Atlanta Braves to fulfill the aspirations that the young team has for the 2020 season.

Maybe, just maybe this will be the wake up call that Sean Newcomb needs, because it surely does feel like this might be one of the last few opportunities for him on the Atlanta Braves roster.

I can not be alone wishing Max Fried could start every day right now for this Atlanta Braves team.
