After Missing out on Trade for Mike Clevinger, Where do Braves Go Next?

Now that we officially know the Atlanta Braves won’t be trading for Mike Clevinger, where does Alex Anthopoulos look to next?

It was certainly a big letdown Monday morning learning that the Atlanta Braves were out on Mike Clevinger and then watching him get traded to the San Diego Padres instead for a deal that many thought was underwhelming from the Indians’ standpoint.

Could the Braves have made a similar or better offer? Sure.

I think had Alex Anthopoulos made an offer along the lines of Drew Waters, Trent Davidson, Braden Shewmake, Adam Duvall, and Alex Jackson it would have been a better offer and similar to the types of players the Padres traded.

But that didn’t happen, and here we are.

After watching the newest Braves starting pitcher, Tommy Milone, get blasted in Philly on Sunday night after being handed a 10-run lead, I’m almost certain AA will find another starting pitcher before the trade deadline.

Whether or not it’s another backend type like a Milone or not, I’m not sure. For the sake of Twitter not exploding with angry fans, let’s hope it’s not.

The problem is, there just aren’t a lot of top of the rotation arms available out there.

After Clevinger, the next best thing is Lance Lynn.

He does come with another year of control, but the price on him is expected to be quite lofty as well. And with Clevinger off the board, there are going to be several teams pushing up the price on Lynn.

After Lynn, the next best starting pitcher on the trade market is probably Dylan Bundy. Once a can’t miss prospect, Bundy had a hard road to finally becoming a solid starting pitcher in Los Angeles this year.

But it’s a very small sample size for Bundy and I expect the asking price from the Angels to be pretty high as well considering they might want to keep Bundy in hopes of competing next year.

That doesn’t leave a ton of good options out there for AA unless the Indians are going to trade from them depth again and make Zach Plesac available, which I kind of doubt.

dark. Next. More Reinforcements Needed

We know AA is very quiet and perhaps he’s looking at a top arm none of us know is even available. For the sake of our sanity over the next few hours, lets certainly hope so.
