Jared Shuster strikes out four in first Triple-A start
Jared Shuster pitched five innings in his first Triple-A start with the Gwinnett Stripers.
As Gwinnett, the Atlanta Braves AAA team, fell on Thursday night to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins), Jared Shuster pitched a full five innings in his first start since being promoted to Triple-A.
Shuster picked up the loss for the Stripers in the 5-0 shutout.
In his five innings pitched, Shuster allowed five hits and earned two runs, walking two batters and striking out four.
Shuster also surrendered a home run in the top of the third inning to right fielder Jason Burdick, the ninth-ranked prospect in the Marlins’ system. His ERA in Triple-A now sits at 3.60 as he looks forward to his next start.
It’s also worth noting that Shuster pitched against major-league veteran Edward Cabrera, who allowed one hit and struck out five in his rehab appearance.
The former first-round draft pick from Wake Forest was promoted on Tuesday after a strong showing with the Double-A Mississippi Braves in the first half of the season.
During his 17 games with the Mississippi Braves, Shuster pitched 90-2/3 innings, compiling a 2.78 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP.
He also showcased his low walk rate and high strikeout rate in Mississippi, averaging just 2.18 walks per nine innings to go with an impressive 10.52 strikeouts per nine innings.
His strong showing during the first half of the season earned him a trip to the All-Star Futures Game at Dodgers Stadium., where he pitched a team-high inning and a third.
As Shuster looks to prepare for his next start in Gwinnett, the seventh-ranked prospect in the Braves system can have his first performance behind him.
