Braves News: Huascar Ynoa Undergoes Successful Tommy John Surgery

The 2022 season hasn’t gone the way Huascar Ynoa had hoped coming in, and now it got even worse for the Atlanta Braves young pitcher as he had Tommy John surgery. 

With how great the Atlanta Braves pitching staff has been this year, Huascar Ynoa has kind of been lost in the mix. And now he’ll be lost for even longer after having Tommy John surgery on Wednesday.

It came as a bit of a surprise as the team broke the news on Wednesday that not only was he going to have Tommy John surgery but that he already had it and it was successful.

The 24-year-old righty last pitched for Gwinnett on August 24 tossing 2 scoreless innings.

He was in the midst of a subpar season at Triple-A with a 5.68 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 77.2 innings with 35 walks, 87 strikeouts, and a .246 average against.

Ynoa made a couple of starts for the big league club in April giving up 10 earned runs on 11 hits and 6 walks over 6.2 innings across 2 starts with 8 strikeouts.

It’s really been a struggle for him since he punched that wall in Milwaukee that shelved him for three months last year.

He had a couple of solid starts when he came back, but was bad in September and pitched in just 1 inning in the postseason.

The rehabilitation process for Tommy John surgery is typically about 18 months for pitchers, which means he’s out for all of 2023 and likely the beginning of 2024.

This is certainly unfortunate for Ynoa who had shown some promise and gave the Braves some big starts at the beginning of 2021.

But with the roster being as tight as it is, and he being out for at least a year and a half, it will be interesting to see what the Braves decide to do with him this offseason.
