ICYMI: Former Atlanta Braves Trade Acquisition Carlos Quentin is out of the League

For those of you wondering if the Atlanta Braves let some power go or are expecting Carlos Quentin to do something great for us…don’t hold your breath.

If you guys remember, Carlos Quentin was acquired in the deal that sent Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton to the San Diego Padres.

Most of us were shocked at both the timing AND the players mentioned. Not that Melvin, formerly known as BJ, was traded, but in the fact that in order for us to get rid of BJ we had to throw in our franchise closer.

It happened. We MUST get over it.

In that deal though, we received the following commodities in return:

Paroubeck (@JParoubeck24) is in our minor league system with the Danville Braves and is currently the #23 ranked prospect in our system.

Maybin (@SpiderMayB24) is looking like the prospect that everyone talked about years ago when he first broke into the league with Detroit; now sporting career highs in avg (.286) an OBP (.359) and close to his career high of .409 SLG (.398)

Wisler (@Wisler233) was being used in the minors to be the future of our pitching staff, but is in the majors now after the team decided to send Mike Foltynewicz (@Folty25) down to work on confidence and mechanics. Wisler is currently the #2 ranked prospect in the Braves system.

Carlos Quentin is no longer with the Braves.

Quentin spent from April 5 to April 13 as a member of the Braves. He never stepped foot on any field or had the chance to sport the name on the #FrontOfTheJersey. The team paid $8 million dollars to release the former 2-time All-Star (’08 & ’11) on April 14.

At the time, I was puzzled.

Surely this guy had at least some sort of “moderate” power still left in the tank, right?

Well apparently I wasn’t the only one thinking that because just over a week later the Seattle Mariners signed the slugger to a minor league contract.

Most of you are probably thinking… “Why didn’t we do that?” Well when we received him in our trade, he was on a major league roster, getting major league pay and we can’t just demote a nine-year veteran just because we feel like it. There are rules to protect these guys via the Players Association and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

But the Braves scouts must have known something that took the Mariners 10 days to figure out because he was no longer on their roster as of May 2.

I am assuming that Quentin thought his chronic knee problems would not be as bad as he assumed, but that was not the case.

Quentin retired from baseball on May 1.

So far the $8Mil given in the buyout was a bargain when you compare what we received and the numbers that came off the books in the Upton AND Kimbrel contracts.

Still wish he had a little something in the tank, or in this case in his legs, because we could use a little power these days.

#BravesCountry wishes you well and hopes your retirement treats you fair.

Safe Travels Quentin 🙂
