Atlanta Braves Cameron Maybin Returns to Lineup After Strange Injury

Atlanta Braves outfielder, Cameron Maybin, returns to the starting lineup since leaving the game on September 5th with an eye injury.  The 28-year-old had missed nine straight starts due to a corneal abrasion.  Maybin pinched hit twice while he was out, once on Sunday and the other plate appearance on Tuesday.  He went 0-2 in both at-bats.

Maybin is in the midst of his best season as a professional as he currently has a slash line of .267/.331/.381 with 10 home runs, 52 RBIs, 21 stolen bases, 18 doubles and 61 runs scored.

According to WebMD – A corneal abrasion is a scratch on the eye’s cornea.  The cornea is the clear, protective covering over the iris, which is the colored part of the eye, and the pupil — the black circle in the middle of the eye.

The injury probably occurred because of a piece of dirt from the infield got into Maybin’s eye and he tried to rub the piece of dirt out.  Rubbing the eye is known to not be the answer and could cause it to worsen.  You’re suppose to blink several times in a row and/or rinse your eye with water.  If this doesn’t help, go see a doctor.

Although rubbing your eye is probably your initial reaction, it’s not the best.  I’m thinking that’s what happened in this situation.

If you recall, the Braves received Maybin in the San Diego trade on April 5th that included sending Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton to the Padres.  The Braves received top pitching prospect Matt Wisler, Jordan Paroubeck, Carlos Quentin, a 1st round pick in the 2015 draft, and Maybin.  The 1st round pick that the Braves chose with the Padres pick was Austin Riley…the 3rd baseman who had a terrific season for the Braves.

Maybin was the 10th overall pick in the 2005 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers, and debuted with them in 2007.  He’s played for the Tigers, Marlins, Padres, and Braves.
