Braves first baseman Adams exits game

Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Adams left Thursday night’s game after fouling a ball off his foot.  During his first at-bat in the 2nd inning, Adams took a big cut but didn’t get enough of the ball.  The baseball shot off Adams’ bat and right down to his foot/shin area.

The 28-year-old has been very productive since the Braves acquired him on May 20 from the St. Louis Cardinals.  As a part of the Braves, he’s batted .296/348/.620 in the 36 games.  Adams has hit 12 homers, a triple, eight doubles and has 31 RBIs.

With Adams being such a huge addition to the lineup, losing him would be a disaster.  Freddie Freeman is committed to coming off the disabled list to play third base just to keep Adams’ bat in the lineup.

If Adams has to go on the DL, how does that affect Freddie’s rehab assignment?

Of course, we could be getting ahead of ourselves here.  Adams could have been removed from the game just as a precautionary move.  He looked to be in a lot of pain as he walked towards the dugout after striking out in this AB.  In any case, his foot is going to be sore.

Jace Peterson entered the game for the Braves in the bottom of the 2nd inning at first base.  He has a little experience there as he bridged the gap from Freeman to Adams earlier this season.

From the video, it looks as though the foul ball hit Adams in the left shin and then bounced off his foot.  Hopefully, the x-rays come back negative here.

Adams and the training staff went back into the locker room and took x-rays.  Adams is being diagnosed with a left foot contusion, but the good news is that the x-rays came back negative.

His status is day-to-day…great, great, great news!
