Atlanta Braves Ozzie Albies was safe at first base and I’m still pissed about it

Ozzie Albies was safe at first base, so why did the umps call him out?

Okay, so I’m still a little bit angry from last nights Atlanta Braves vs Colorado Rockies game.  Baseball is such a wonderful game in a way that you can just put the last game behind you very quickly.  But…we still have a few hours before the next game starts so we can still vent!

Let’s set up the scene in case you missed it…

It was the 6th inning of Saturday nights game.  The Braves were down 2-0 and really struggling to not hit into a double play.  Braves starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez just got done throwing five pretty strong innings at Coors Field and Lane Adams pinch-hit for him.

Adams led off the inning with a walk.  After Ender Inciarte flew out, Ozzie Albies was at the plate.

After the count went to 1-2, Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado took a few steps back at third.  Albies saw him move back so decided to bunt.  The bunt was perfect.  The play by Rockies catcher Tony Walters may have been even more perfect.

Take a look at the play…

So yeah, the play was fantastic by Walters, but it’s not about that.  Albies hustled his way to first and was safe!  The play was absolutely close, you can’t argue that.  I can’t blame the ump on the field, because it was a bang-bang play.  I couldn’t imagine being in that position.  BUT the Braves challenged the play and it went into review!

The umps on the field called up the good boys in New York to take a look at this play.  As we were waiting on their returned decision.  FOX Sports showed their replays on the broadcast.  They slowed it down at the exact point of Albies hitting the bag and the ball hitting the glove.

SWEET he’s SAFE!!

Nope.  The umps came back and signaled that Albies was out.  Unreal.

Chip and Joe commented on the broadcast about having conclusive evidence of the play.  But they did!

Look at the photo FOX Sports: Braves posted…

Sure looks like his foot was on the bag before the ball hit the back of the glove.  Is this turning into the NFL and the catch rule?  When does the first baseman have the ball?  I would think it has to hit the back of the glove.

After the game, Ozzie told reports how he felt about the play…

“Everybody says I was safe.  I know I was safe, too.  I don’t see why they have replay if they still didn’t make the right (call).”

Couldn’t agree more with the 21-year-old.  Why have this replay system if they can’t get it right.  I would have been okay with just being upset on the call on the field.  But to get it wrong again with replay?  Man…

Was this play that important?

Yes.

If safe, the Braves would have had runners on first and second with Freddie Freeman up.  Freddie ripped a pitch over the Rockies left fielder’s head for a double.  This would have scored both Adams and Albies.  AND tied the game at 2-2.

Looking ahead (and I realize anything could have happened) when the Braves scored in the top of the 9th inning, it would have been for the win instead of for the tie.

I’m still pretty upset about the call.  Ozzie should not have been called out after the replay review.
